Psychological Therapy

I am experienced in many different areas but I specialise in the treatment of anxiety disorders, with a particular interest in appearance-related anxiety to include eating distress. Difficulties I can help with include:

  • Appearance-related anxiety and body image concerns
  • Restricted eating (including anorexia nervosa)
  • Eating involving binge/purge cycles (including bulimia nervosa)
  • Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD)
  • Social anxiety
  • Panic
  • Specific phobias

In addition to the above, I also treat difficulties commonly related to anxiety and eating distress such as:

  • Low mood
  • Low self-esteem
  • Perfectionism

How I work

I am committed to delivering high quality therapies that are supportive and evidence based.  This means that research has been conducted, often over many years, with large numbers of people, into the treatment method to ensure it is an effective treatment for that condition.  The approach I use depends on the person I am working with and can be influenced by several factors: for example, the individual’s preference, the difficulties they are experiencing and which treatment would be most helpful.

I work flexibly using a variety of therapeutic approaches including:

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

CBT focuses on the individual and makes links between how we think, feel in our bodies, our behaviour and emotions. It is a goal-orientated approach that focuses mainly on the ‘here and now’. For further information, click here and watch a brief animation on CBT

Solution-Focused Approaches

Solution focused approaches offer brief interventions that explore what an individual wishes to gain from therapy rather than the historical problems that have perhaps brought them to therapy. It focuses on the present and an individual’s preferred future. It helps identify an individual’s strengths and resources and explores how these might help them move towards their preferred way of living.

I do not work exclusively using these frameworks and I often work by integrating ideas and approaches from one or more approach to meet the specific needs of the people I work with.  Wherever possible, I like to involve the individual’s significant other(s) in their treatment plan where appropriate.

Pre-Surgery Psychological Consultation

Psychological assessment can be an important part of surgical care. It offers an opportunity  to discuss surgery in the context of your current concerns and well-being. It can assist with planning and can provide recommendations on how to manage post-operative care to maximise the effectiveness of the surgery in terms of psychosocial outcomes (i.e. how you feel about it afterwards). Please contact me here for further information.

Teaching and Training

I offer workshops to both education and healthcare providers.  If you are interested in a workshop on any of the areas detailed above, please contact me here to discuss options.

Mentoring and Supervision

I offer mentoring and supervision  to health professionals working in various settings. Please contact me here for further information.
